merempahThe Indonesian spice atlas

About

merempah is an English field guide to Indonesian spices: what they are, where they grow, and the dishes they make, island by island.

The name

EntryKBBI
merempah (v.)
1to season with spice
2, archaicto roam, to wander

In Indonesian, merempah means to season food with spice. In an older sense, recorded as archaic in the Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia, it also meant to roam. This atlas tries to do both: travel the islands, and come back with what they cook.

Sources first

Every page lists its sources, and every number, date and quote should trace back to one. Where sources disagree, we say so.

Images, credited

We use public-domain botanical plates, openly licensed photographs credited beside each image, and our own maps and drawings.

How we make videos

Our Field Notes videos use a synthetic narration voice and illustrations where no licensed photo exists. The real photos are on the matching page here.
